Sharing my Paucis Verbis cards using Dropbox

After much discussion in a prior post about the pros and cons of Evernote, Google Docs, and Dropbox, I think all of these applications are great for reading PDFs on the go. These are all examples of cloud computing. Deciding which you like better might depend on what side-features you like:
  • Ability to edit on mobile phones
  • Your preference of graphic interface layout
  • Searchability
  • Geo-location tagging
  • How many people you want to collaborate with
I initially thought to share my Paucis Verbis cards by sharing my Evernote folder publically. Unfortunately, this only works for the web-version of your Evernote account and not for the iPhone app. Dropbox was mentioned several times because the shared files also appear on various mobile phone platforms.

So I am also uploading my Paucis Verbis cards to a PV Dropbox folder on a weekly basis starting now, in addition to Evernote. Unfortunately, I have to manually enter your email address to share my Dropbox folder. So if you contact me or leave your email in the comments box below, I'll share my folder with you. I think the cards should also transfer to your mobile device.

  2. Awesome. Hope the date-numbering system for the cards aren't too obtrusive. Fortunately you can search a particular card using the Search box. Although a little cumbersome, I "favorited" the cards (hit the Star button on each card) on my iPhone to improve loadup times, since you don't need internet to view "favorited" cards. Our ED's access to wireless internet and 3G signal is sporadic.

  3. A quick note about DB. There's also an option to publicly share files that is you provide the link and everyone can access that file, without email invitation. Unfortunately DB doesn't (yet?) allow you to share a whole folder this way but using some very easy html coding you can create (manually or automatically) an index.htm file which links to the files in the particular folder. There are scripts to automatically update that html file making the process completely automatic once setup.

  4. Hey David: That is amazing that you found this out. I'll have to read more about it. In the meantime, I'm still happy to manually enter the emails.

  5. If you can save you cards in an image (jpeg) format, you can place them in a folder inside your dropbox Photo directory. Then right click to publicly share the images. Dropbox will even arrange them in a nice gallery.

  6. Hey Ben: Yet another great idea. My jpg images of the PV cards don't turn out as sharp a resolution as the PDFs for the same file sizes. This is a great tip though. I'm sure to use it in the future. Thanks for checking into it.

  7. Hi Michelle and others!

I absolutely love dropbox for all things personal and sharing too (on all my devices). Having said that, one word of warning: the shared folder is truly shared, so anyone can modify or delete files. On the other hand, I think DB saves previous versions of documents...

  9. Love the blog! I have been a huge fan of DB for quite some time. For other DB lovers with .edu emails, DB has just increased their referral bonus to 500MB and are offering it retroactively.

  10. RichT: Thanks for the tip. Awesome perk. I've gotten a few 250 MB referral additions. Helps a lot with storing files.
